    • Immigration and assimilation
    o Great Gatsby [assimilation into a new social group]
    o Namesake [both immigration and assimilation]
    o Ceremony [assimilation into white society]
    • Social class boundaries
    o Great Gatsby [Daisy and Jay’s love]
    o Namesake [not really shown in book, but consider how Americans perceive immigrants]
    o Ceremony [difference Native American and white people in society]
    • Identity and Search for Identity
    o Great Gatsby [Gatsby changes himself and his name to fit in and be accepted]
    o Namesake [Gogol’s lifelong rejection of his name and eventually accepting despite changing it]
    o Ceremony [Tayo does not belong because of his mixed heritage and veterans look for identity by joining the war and fighting for their country but the belonging is short lived]
    • Pursuit of Happiness / American Dream
    o Great Gatsby [Gatsby spends his entire time in the novel chasing after this life that he wants]
    o Namesake [Gogol believes that after he changes his name he will truly be happy, Ashoke believed that going to America would make their lives much happier]
    o Ceremony [Veterans and Rocky want to get off reservation and be out in America because they believe that they could get an even better taste for America and be a part of America instead of being in a segregated reservation]

    o Great Gatsby [Gatsby is his own worst enemy by trapping himself]
    o Namesake [Gogol makes his name embarrassing for himself]
    o Ceremony [Helen Jean keeps saying she’ll leave, but she never does and Emo feels angry towards white people and Tayo for privileges that he wants]
